Hyde Park Big Screens: This is more like it! After a very unsuccessful trip to Victoria Park, I was nervous heading towards the much bigger experience of Hyde Park - a larger site has the potential to be even more empty. I need not have feared. The place was rammed, it took half an hour just queueing to get it! And the atmosphere was buzzing. With four big screens, and it being a weekend of stonking British success, people a wave of people moved between each of them to catch Murray on Centre Court or Clancy in the veladrome. The most exciting moments were reserved for fresh GB Gold Medals. Sat near the back, my view of the screen was obstructed by thousands of hands, flags and bodies flying into the air and the commentary drowned out by cheering, clapping and some very enthusiastic screams. Now that GB are on the ascendance, the general public seem to be shifting into gear when it comes to supporting the home team and enjoying the Olympic circus (damn glory hunters, I’ve been here the whole bloody time).

The 1908 London Olympic Medal table features the Tug of War competition; a competition dominated by Team GB . Well, actually, the police force of GB. The Gold medal team were from the London Police force while the silver medalists were from the Liverpool bobbies. The Americans were not happy though. They claimed the Brits cheated by having spikes on the bottom of their boots. The Brits said that they were just their normal work boots.

GB Taekwondo Resembles England Football Team

Alas, with each passing day, the suspicion grows that British taekwondo is inching dangerously close to what we might call the England football tournament experience – that strange state of affairs wherein watching England infight and implode their way to a championship is considerably more entertaining than watching a minute of their performance once they get there. For those of us yet to fully immerse ourselves in the discipline, Olympic taekwondo is going to have to be pretty darned spectacular to beat the backbiting, bloodletting, and other unauthorised moves that appear to constitute Olympic taekwondo selection.
